Gail Johannes (gailjo)  > Special Places in the San Juan Islands > Speiden Island > Spieden Island in November
Clyde and Barbara Teague share Lazyjacks for a midday cruise to Spieden Island for wildlife viewing. These shots were all from a moving boat looking onto the island from at least 100' offshore.

Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Wooden skeletons litter the landscape.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > These deer have reached the height of the windswept ridge- note the sparseness of the grass. The island has the potential of being overgrazed as the number of animals increases.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > The Mouflon males and females live in separate groups and only come together during mating season. The ewes will usually have the better foraging grounds because their health is more important for reproduction. Mouflons mate, or go through a rut, in late autumn to early winter. The rams' dominance is determined by their age and the size of their horns.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Fervent whistles did nothing to engage this ram intent on grazing.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > The trees on the wind and glacier swept expanses are extraordinarily shaped.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Very few leaves to be seen, this is likely only a wooden sculpture at this juncture.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Fallow fawns are usually born as singles, rarely twins, between May and early June. At birth they can be as varied in colour as the adults but all will be spotted to a greater or lesser degree.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Black and white abstraction lends further starkness to the landscape.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > The scattered deer lend scale to this odd landscape.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Evidence of life - a river of fallen leaves.

Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Youngsters brave the shoreline for a little seaweed nibbling.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > He seemed to take a bite and chew several times as we watched.
Gail Johannes (gailjo) > Rare moment when they made eye contact with the camera.
